Aquashicola playground nearing completion
Thanks to community support, a playground in Lower Towamensing Township has been given a face lift.
The Aquashicola playground improvement project is nearing completion, according to Rory Koons, president of the Aquashicola Fire Department.
“New swings, playground equipment, LED lighting, a resurfaced basketball court and backboards and rims have made the facility a safe and enjoyable recreation facility for those who frequent the playground,” Koons said.
Koons said the Lower Towamensing Township board of supervisors obtained a Department of Community and Economic Resources grant to revamp the playground.
He said that with the assistance of some local organizations, additional improvements were made.
Koons said that additional funding was also received from the Krill Youth Foundation, Palmerton Pacemakers Association and the Horsehead Community Fund. The electrical upgrades were also provided by Duane Frable Electric.
He said the playground was established by the Aquashicola Fire Company in the mid-1960s.
Koons said after the fire company purchased and excavated the property, the Krill Youth Foundation stepped up and assisted with equipment for the basketball court and the playground.
“Throughout the years, improvements were made however time had taken its toll and eventually a complete overhaul was necessary,” he said. “COVID slowed the process and delayed the project, however it was eventually completed.”
Bill George, fire chief of Aquashicola Fire Department who also served as the project coordinator, heaped praise on all who assisted the fire company.
“This project has been a joint effort with the township and the fire department,” George said. “The other organizations offered their assistance when funding fell short and without their donation, the project would not have been completed.”
George said that while the fire company continues to provide the electricity for the playground lighting and is an ongoing expense, “We are pleased to see the kids enjoying the playground.”
The fire company also extended its appreciation to all involved in making the improvements, and recognized all the efforts of the Lower Towamensing Township Public Safety department for its role and equipment in this project.
