Palmerton woman places 2nd in contest

A Palmerton area woman placed second in the Pennsylvania Make It With Wool contest recently.

The event was held on Oct. 1 at the PA Preferred Banquet Hall of the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

Katherine Augustine took second in the adult division for her three-piece ensemble.

She created an unlined easy-fitting jacket, reminiscent of cozy southwestern blankets, incorporated Hong Kong seam finishing and convenient deep pockets. The chocolate brown hand-knit worsted weight sweater features a front button placket, saddle shoulder shaping, and intricate cabled sleeve panels.

Enhanced with flat felled seaming and a front zipper accent, the rich turquoise slim fitting skirt provides a zing to Kathy’s outfit and reflects her southwest color palette.

Augustine said that her mother taught her to sew, and her daughter taught her to knit.

She is especially pleased with the sweater that she created and feels that more people should know about and enter the Make It With Wool contest.

“It is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and your skills … and have a great addition to your wardrobe.”

The contest asks entrants to create a piece of clothing that is then judged based on poise, construction of the garment(s), fit and wearability, and promotion of the versatility of wool.

The contest aims to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns; encourage personal creativity in sewing, knitting, and crocheting with wool fabrics and yarns; and develop life skills, including being responsible for oneself, being a good sport, accepting judge’s decisions, and learning about and appreciating diversity.
