Carbon County court
A Schuylkill County man was sentenced to county prison terms in Carbon County court this week, but won’t be spending anymore time in prison since he has already served his minimum.
Charles Lewis Thatcher VII, 22, of Tamaqua and formerly of Coaldale, appeared before Judge Joseph J. Matika to enter a guilty plea to one count of robbery, as a felony 3, and to be sentenced on a drug charge, which he previously pleaded guilty.
The robbery incident occurred on Feb. 1 in the area of 109 E. Patterson St. Lansford police responded to the area for a reported robbery with threats, allegedly with a knife and brass knuckles involved. On scene, officers spoke with the two victims who identified Thatcher as the assailant. The police report indicated the incident might have involved a drug deal gone bad.
Last year, Thatcher pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested on Nov. 18, 2016, by Nesquehoning police at the intersection of North Mermon Avenue and Mill Street. The police report said crystal methamphetamine and diazepam were found. Police initially responded to a report of a suspicious male in the area.
On the robbery charge, Mitka sentenced him to serve nine to one day less 24 months in prison with credit for 502 days already served. On the drug count he was sentenced to serve six to 12 months, concurrent with the robbery charge, with credit in that case of 365 days. With the credit time, Thatcher is eligible for parole.
He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendations for treatment, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole, render 100 hours of community service and have no contact with the victims in the robbery.
