Pantry run by volunteers opens in Monroe

Community Hygiene Pantry, based in Bradford County, opened a new pantry Sunday in Brodheadsville.

“With soaring inflation, the cost of basic staples from gas to groceries has increased for everyone,” said Liz Terwilliger of Warren Center, one of the organization’s main organizers. “This includes personal care products. A recent survey of area stores taken by our volunteers indicated in the past year the costs of generic toilet paper, infant and adult diapers and feminine products have increased substantially.”

Terwilliger said this especially affects low and middle-income families, particularly those with young children.

The pantries are created and maintained by volunteers.

After reading about Community Hygiene Pantry, Natasha Pearman-Pile, founder of Power Surge Ministries in Monroe County, contact the pantry’s leaders.

The ministry has been collecting hygiene products for the homeless and thought the idea of a community pantry would be ideal.

The new Community Hygiene Pantry is at 1890 Route 209, Brodheadsville, It is being hosted by the Reaching Out for Jesus Christian Center at that address.

“These pantries are available to the public to stock with donations such as shampoo, toothpaste, diapers, tampons, toilet paper and soap, as well as anything that a family needs for daily personal care free of charge, no questions asked,” Pearman-Pile said.

Reaching Out for Jesus will provide the location for the new pantry. Power Surge Ministries will manage the associated stocking and maintenance. Community members are welcome to stop by and ask questions, collect supplies they need from the pantry or bring donations to share.
