St. Luke’s University Health Network has closed two of its units at the former Palmerton Hospital and moved those patients to their Gnaden Huetten campus in Lehighton.
Officials with the Health Network confirmed on Friday that the Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care Units stopped admitting patients on Monday, June 18.
The patients in those units have been relocated to Gnaden Huetten Campus in Lehighton.
The only remaining inpatient unit at Palmerton — the older adult behavioral health unit — will be moving to Gnaden Huetten this fall, officials also confirmed.
Palmerton and Gnaden Huetten became part of the St. Luke’s Network on Jan. 1 after the former Blue Mountain Health System announced it was merging with St. Luke’s.
The reason for the move, according to St. Luke’s spokesman Sam Kennedy, was facility issues at Palmerton. He said there were issues with the ventilation system at the Palmerton campus that made the move necessary.
Kennedy said there are no planned job cuts as a result of the move. All of the positions will be transitioned to the Gnaden Huetten campus or other locations within the St. Luke’s University Health Network.
The Palmerton Campus continues to offer emergency services, outpatient services and physician offices. The hospital first opened in 1908.
St. Luke’s operates 10 hospitals in the greater Lehigh Valley area, including Palmerton, Gnaden Huetten, and Miners Campus in Coaldale.
