The Nesquehoning Historical Society will welcome historian Vince Hydro for a talk and visual presentation entitled “The History of Uranium in Carbon County & the Radon Problem” at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
This talk will include the history of the discovery of Uranium by Dr. Bertine S. Erwin in Mauch Chunk in 1886, and subsequent attempts to develop uranium mines in Mauch Chunk and other areas in Pennsylvania.
The presentation will also include the relationship between the presence of uranium in the ground and the radon problem in eastern Pennsylvania.
Following the event Hydro will be signing copies of his publications. Sales of these books benefit the Historical Society.
The events will take place at the NHS Museum, 157 W. Railroad St. in Nesquehoning.
This event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the Historical Society are always welcome.
The society will also hold a bus trip to Lancaster on Nov. 12.
Motor coach bus will leave the CVS parking lot at promptly 8 a.m. Those going are asked to be there at 7:45 a.m.
The group will travel to Lancaster to visit Wheatland, the home of James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, visit the Lancaster History Museum, Kitchen Kettle Village and an Amish home where the group will receive a home-cooked meal.
