Bears avenge loss to Nazareth with playoff shutout

NAZARETH – Pleasant Valley seniors Onious George and Michael Meyers both agreed their season took an upward swing when they shut out East Stroudsburg South early in the season.

Wednesday night in a District 11 Class 4A quarterfinal playoff game, both George and Myers along with their teammates accented their point.

George scored the lone goal, and Myers registered 15 saves to help the fifth-seeded Bears blank four-seeded Nazareth, 1-0, at Andrew S. Leh Stadium.

With the win, Pleasant Valley (12-6-1) will meet top-seeded Parkland, a 4-1 winner over Easton, in the district semifinals Nov. 1. It marked the first time Pleasant Valley advanced to the semifinals since 2018 when it beat Northampton in the quarterfinals.

At 37:23, George blasted a 20-footer that found the top-left corner for the game-winner. George felt a sense of revenge from the last time the team’s met during the regular season.

“The last time we played them, we lost 6-0,” he said. “This feels great for all of us. We were all both nervous and excited to play. We all have worked extremely hard to get here.

“This may not have been the most important goal I ever scored, but it was the most pivotal one.”

Myers, who endured a Nazareth rush at the net during the final seven minutes and an overall 19-shot assault, enjoyed being in the moment. He recorded the second-most saves in a game this year behind his 25-save effort against Allentown Central Catholic.

“It’s amazing, really amazing,” he gushed. “They kept coming at me, but I knew I had to keep my cool. I knew I just had to stay focused and do whatever I could. I feel great for my teammates.”

First-year head coach Issac Blagogee watched his team keep its composure.

“We didn’t stop playing, and we kept moving toward the ball,” said Blagogee. “We had three shots in the first half, and then we were able to turn our game up.

“We played it safe and moved the ball from the corner flags. The last seven minutes felt like it was 40 minutes. But these kids played well until the end, and it was a huge win for us.”
