Woman surrenders after standoff; Thorpe police say she threatened girl, officers

A Jim Thorpe woman was awaiting preliminary arraignment Monday morning on multiple charges including felony attempted aggravated assault following a nearly five-hour standoff with police.

Charging documents were filed against Kathleen Kattner, 52, though the case status was still listed as inactive as of press time.

Officers were called to a home in the 600-block of Center Avenue around 7 p.m. Sunday for a domestic dispute where Kattner had threatened a girl with a knife.

“When officers arrived, Kattner threatened them with a Taser and had some type of torch in her hand,” a news release issued by Jim Thorpe police Monday morning stated. “Kattner would not listen to the officers’ commands and barricaded herself inside the residence.”

Police made several attempts to get Kattner to leave the residence, but she would not comply.

“Through the investigation, it was learned Kattner may have been in possession of a handgun,” police said.

A state police Special Emergency Response Team was brought in to assist police, who secured a search warrant and arrest warrant for Kattner.

Around 11:30 p.m., the SERT team approached the residence and, 12 minutes later, Kattner came out willingly and was taken into custody without incident. She was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Lehighton for evaluation.

Pending charges against Kattner include three counts each of attempted aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Joining Jim Thorpe police at the scene over the course of the night were officers from the Summit Hill, Nesquehoning and Mahoning Township police departments, as well as members of the state police, Carbon County District Attorney’s office, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, Lehighton Ambulance, Jim Thorpe Fire Department, Jim Thorpe and Penn Forest Township fire police and the Jim Thorpe Public Works Department.

“The Jim Thorpe Police Department would also like to thank the public for its cooperation and let everyone know that at no point were any members of the public in danger,” police said.
