Man jailed for Megan’s Law violation, fleeing police
A Carbon County man was jailed earlier this week for failure to register as a sexual offender under the provisions of Megan’s Law. He also faces additional charges when he tried to flee police when they attempted to serve a warrant on him.
State police at Lehighton said on Tuesday at 3:57 p.m. troopers went to 253 Lower Valley Drive, in Kunkletown, Polk Township, Monroe County, to serve a warrant on Kristian A. Carwell, 22, who had a listed address of 61 Bowmans Road, in Bowmanstown.
The warrant was issued to the Carbon County Sheriff’s office for failing to register as a sex offender.
When troopers arrived on scene Carwell was in the front of the residence. When he saw troopers he began to run toward into the woods behind the house. Troopers gave pursuit and verbal commands to Carwell to stop, but he ignored them. He was eventually taken into custody in the woods and taken to the Lehighton barracks.
Troopers said Carwell was required to register his address with state police as a convicted sex offender.
A check of Carwell’s registration records revealed that he last registered on March 11 and used an address along East Snyder Avenue in Lansford.
He then listed a Bowmanstown address and claimed he had registered that address with the state police. During an interview he said he had not lived at the Bowmanstown address for the last two weeks.
He was charged with flight to avoid apprehension and resisting arrest for the incident at the Monroe County residence. He is facing a charge of fail to verify address for the Megan’s Law violation.
He was arraigned on the charges before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Monroe County and released on unsecured bail. He was committed to the Monroe County prison in Snydersville on the Carbon warrant.
