A fundraiser for the revitalization of downtown Lehighton will be at a different venue next year.
On a 3-1 vote, borough council last week approved a request from the Lehighton Downtown Partnership to hold the event at Baer Memorial Park.
Councilman Donnie Rehrig, who cast the sole vote in opposition, said that he was opposed because children will be in the park.
Council members Ryan Saunders and Autumn Abelovsky, along with council President Grant Hunsicker, voted in favor of switching locations.
Before the vote, borough solicitor Jim Nanovic cautioned council that the borough’s ordinance states there is to be no alcohol in parks.
“Did you give any consideration to (the fact that) some people may complain there’s alcohol in the park,” Nanovic asked. “You may get people coming in complaining.”
Before the vote, Bambi Elsasser, Lehighton Main Street Manager, said in each of its first three years, the event was held at the Lehighton Outdoor Center.
“It’s outgrowing (Lehighton Outdoor Center owner) Jerry’s (McAward) place,” Elsasser said. “It’s a huge event.”
The fourth annual event is May 6 at Baer Memorial Park in Lehighton.
