Attic fire damages Lansford residence
Quick response by firefighters averted a potentially disastrous fire in the 500 block of East Abbott Street, Lansford, shortly before noon on Wednesday.
Flames broke out in the attic at 511 E. Abbott St., and when firefighters arrived heavy smoke was belching from a side attic window.
Lansford Fire Chief Joseph Greco said the smoke was beginning to turn darker, indicating the fire was intensifying. Firefighters doused the fire before it spread beyond the attic.
Damage reportedly was limited to the attic of the home and to minor water damage on some lower floors of the residence.
The structure is a twin home. No damage was done to the other side.
There were no reported injuries.
It was reported that about nine people and several pets live in the dwelling. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter.
Greco said his preliminary investigation indicates “improper use of an extension cord” may have been the cause of the fire. A state police fire marshal has been summoned to assist in the investigation.
Greco praised the work of the firefighters, not only his Lansford crew but mutual aid received from several other departments.
“The guys made a nice, quick stop,” Greco said. “They did a remarkable job.”
Responding besides Lansford Fire Department were fire companies from Summit Hill, Coaldale, Nesquehoning and Tamaqua. The Tuscarora Fire Company was placed on stand-by.
Lehighton Ambulance, the Lansford Police Department and Nesquehoning Police Department were also at the scene.
Traffic control was handled by Lansford fire police.
