Eldred school attains historic status

It may be small but a former Monroe County school has made a big splash nationally.

The 1855 Frantz One-Room Schoolhouse in Eldred Township was placed on the National Register of Historic Places last Friday.

The restored schoolhouse, at 485 Church Road in Kunkletown, is the only remaining one-room schoolhouse in Monroe County.

“The road, to inclusion in the National Register, was a long, arduous, often uphill journey,” said Tony Giordano, one of the hosts at the Frantz school. “But the support of the township, the local historical society and our ‘family’ of elected officials made the trip possible.”

Giordano also praised local and former residents of Kunkletown who worked to put the Frantz school on the national map.

“It is exciting to know that this building, which was nearly lost five years ago, is now a permanent part of our nation’s history,” Giordano said.

There will be an open house at the schoolhouse on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors, in addition to viewing historic exhibits, will receive a copy of the “Eldred Passport.”

The four-page booklet, the size of a greeting card, includes a brief history of Eldred Township, a history of the 1855 Frantz One-Room Schoolhouse and information about accessing a 47-stop tour of sites of interest in Eldred/Kunkletown.

The passport also includes a road map of the town with a checklist of places to visit. Anyone completing the checklist will receive a certificate via email.

Giordano said the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office helped with the years-long process of being placed on the national registry.

“It sends chills up my spine to hear that the school was included in the National Register because the Frantz One-Room Schoolhouse is important to the preservation of an important era in the history of our nation,” Giordano said.
