Mount Pocahontas in Albrightsville held its first car show on Saturday, with part of the proceeds benefiting Valor House.

Events coordinator Ellen Cuffari said the event was planned when community member Bradley Fly came to her with the idea. Fly recently moved into Mt. Pocahontas and wanted to “try to help the community as I love cars and motorcycles.” He chose Valor House because “Veterans don’t get enough recognition and I have family members in the military.”

He has been doing car shows for 5 years with his ‘03 Ford Mustang GT convertible which was his dads.

Bob Horn, owner of a 1950 Chevy truck, and his friend Duane Gilmartin, owner of a 1948 Chevy truck showed their vehicles side by side. Horn did the paint job on the trucks and Gilmartin handled the mechanical needs. Both trucks had been farm trucks and were “too slow” as they had 3 column shift and maxed at 40 mph. They put in modern drive trains, modern electronics, AC and power steering. Horn said that it is a “continuous process to update the trucks.”

A purple Dodge Hellcat was a show favorite. When asked how he got into cars, owner Darrien Reiss went into his car and pulled out a picture of a familiar ’60s and ’70s cartoon character. It was Speed Racer. Many recall the theme song, “go speed racer go,“ with his sidekick Chim Chim the monkey and girlfriend Trixie. Darren and wife Cindy own 11 show cars. In 1991 they purchased their first car, a 1956 Chevy Sedan for a mere $300.

Door prizes such as car care products were donated by local businesses. A 50/50 raffle was held, with half the proceeds going to Valor House. Donations were suggested for hamburgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill.
