Local Roundup: Results from Aug. 27

Lehighton, Pleasant Valley, Marian and Northwestern all picked up boys soccer victories on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Lehighton-Palmerton

Four different players scored as Lehighton topped Palmerton, 5-1, in the non-league season opener for both squads.

AJ Light paced the Indians with two goals and an assist, while Matt Sofranko, Mason Marchessault and Ever Schaeffer all added single scores. Jacob Anthony, Gabe Reed and Logan Yaro added assists.

Peyton Waibel posted the Bombers’ lone goal.

Lehighton goalie Bryce Miller made one save, while his Bomber counterpart Gavin Young finished with seven saves.

Pleasant Vy.-Jim Thorpe

Pleasant Valley defeated Jim Thorpe, 3-0, in a non-league game.

Dominick Balzano sparked the Bears with two goals, while Raymond Slobozian produced the other score on a first-half penalty kick.

Pleasant Valley goalie Michael Meyers made five saves to record the shutout. Blake Barberio made eight saves in the Olympians’ goal.

LLA-Marian

Jacob Tom had a huge game as Marian rolled to a 7-1 victory over Lincoln Leadership Academy in its season opener.

Tom had a hand in all of the Colts’ goals as he scored five times and added a pair of assists. Ian Mikita had two goals for Marian, while goalie Edison Mitchell made 10 saves.

Whitehall-Northwestern

Northwestern picked up a 3-1 non-league victory over Whitehall.

Dartanyon DeLillo and Jack Mauro (both) had first-half goals for the Tigers (2-0). Joshua Zellner added an insurance goal in the second half. Zellner, Cayden Fitch and Logan Mesics all had assists for Northwestern.

Tiger goalie Damian Krapf made seven saves.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Pen Argyl

Jim Thorpe got its season off to an impressive start with a convincing 7-0 non-league win over Pen Argyl.

Mackenzie Yuhas sparked the Olympians’ offense with three goals and an assist, while Lauren LeKites added two goals and an assist. Alex Marotto and Nicole Carroll both chipped in with single scores for the Olympians. Riley Rushatz, Chloe Burkhart and Camille Chambers all were credited with assists.

Jim Thorpe keeper Olivia Rosenberger made three saves.

FIELD HOCKEY

Lehighton-Northwestern

Daniella Lister’s two goals led Northwestern to a 4-0 non-league victory over Lehighton.

The Tigers’ Carsyn Van Norman chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Josey Wehr added a goal and Brooke Page had an assist.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Palisades

Jim Thorpe posted a 3-2 non-league win over Palisades.

The Olympians’ Chloe Tarthla and Keira Reese paired up to seal the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Pirates’ Chesney Mosher and Riley Alkhas at No. 1 doubles.

Tara McLean and Ashlynn Miller each posted singles’ play wins for the Olympians, who evened out their season record at 1-1.

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Hazleton blanked Tamaqua, 5-0.

Megan Oswald was the only Blue Raider to win a set as she pushed the Cougars’ Nanci Major to the limit at No. 2 Singles before dropping a 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 decision.

VOLLEYBALL

Tamaqua-Palmerton

Palmerton dropped the first two games before rallying for a 16-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 15-11 non-league win over visiting Tamaqua.

Alysa Roe (six assists), Jess Heydt (five kills) and Emily Christopher (four kills) all played key roles in the Bombers’ opening-day victory.

Lacey Beers led the Blue Raiders with eight digs and three aces. Eileen Lusch (four digs, two aces), Sarah Coccio (three aces, two blocks) and Gabby Blasko (five digs) also contributed for Tamaqua.

Cardinal Clash Tournament

Jim Thorpe traveled to Pine Grove over the weekend to take part in the annual Cardinal Clash Invitational Tournament.

The Olympians captured first place in their pool to reach the knockout round where they were eventually eliminated by Tri-Valley in the semifinals.

Maggy Hallihan sparked the Olympians’ attack with 33 assists, 14 aces, eight kills and five digs. Brooke Mitzen (22 kills, six aces), Olivia Calcano (18 digs), Brianna Snisky (10 kills, six blocks, four aces), Leah Figura (11 kills, 10 digs, five aces), Priscilla Patton (eight kills, four digs), Kelsey Patton (eight kills, two blocks) and Maura Malaska (27 service points) also had strong performances for the Olympians.

Marian-Schuylkill Valley

Schuylkill Valley defeated Marian, 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-22 in non-league action.

Setter Julia Meiss orchestrated the Fillies’ attack with 37 assists, five digs and two aces. Megan Paisley (13 kills, 10 digs, five blocks) and Jenna Goff (10 kills, 10 digs) both added double doubles for the Fillies, while Megan Reaman (10 digs, two aces) and Fatikha Tikhtova (seven kills, nine blocks) also contributed.
