Rush to revamp parks
C’mon Spring, we know you’re out there.
And Rush Township supervisors can’t wait for a break in the weather. They are poised to receive two DCNR grants totaling $260,000, which will be spent on improvements to three of the township’s parks, to include bathrooms, a pavilion, playsets and a disc golf course. The township will have to provide $55,000 in matching funds for the projects and hopes to raise some of the monies through banner sponsorship.
Rush Township Supervisor Robert Leibensperger talked about the grants and the projects before the regular monthly township meeting Thursday.
“The banners at Miller Park will be large, to be placed on the fence around the ballfield,” Leibensperger said. “We will also be seeking sponsors for each basket at a disc golf course which will be built at Ryan Park.”
The sponsorship banner can include a business name or a person’s name. The cost is $200 initially, and $150 per year after that. The banners for baskets on the disc golf course, to be located in the 26-acre Ryan Park, have the same cost but will be smaller to be placed on the post that holds the basket.
Rush Township is loaded with public parks (www.rushtownship.org, search under recreation for park locations and features). The six parks are named Grier City, Miller Park/Ballfield, Ryan/Old Hauto, Quakake, Kelly and Lincoln. The township acquired the Grier City Park in 2015, when the Grier City Union Sunday School Association turned the ownership over to the township. The 8-acre park includes a pavilion that is slated to be replaced using grant monies. Some of the play equipment may also be replaced.
An ADA compliant restroom facility is slated for Miller Park.
“That’s where we have our free-lunch programs and other programs,” Leibensperger said. “It will help us provide a good place for children to play, and a means for them to enjoy recreation.”
During the meeting, supervisors:
• Hired Jesus Marmolejos and Ryan Poelnurk as part-time police officers, contingent on successful background checks and certifications.
• Appointed Jacklyn Zukovich Varner to the planning commission, and appointed Lisa Price to the Zoning Hearing Board.
• Hired Steven Foster as a full-time employee on the road crew.
• Conditionally approved the David and Beth Mazieka subdivision located on East Main Street.
