D-11 playoffs open in several sports

District 11 playoff action will take place this week in boys soccer, girls soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross country.

BOYS SOCCER

Five area teams qualified with Tamaqua and Northwestern both earning top seeds.

In Class 1A, Weatherly is the No. 6 seed and will travel to No. 3 seed Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg for a quarterfinal round game on Thursday. The start time of that game has yet to be announced..

In Class 2A, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe are the top two seeds and both received first-round byes. The Raiders, who will face the winner of the Pen Argyl-Pine Grove game, and Olympians, who face the Notre Dame Green Pond-Palisades winner, will play semifinal round games on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

In Class 3A, top-seeded Northwestern received a bye into the semifinals. The Tigers will play on Tuesday, Oct. 30 against the Allentown Central Catholic-Southern Lehigh winner.

In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley is the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 seed Northampton in a quarterfinal round game on Thursday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Three area teams are part of the field.

In Class 2A, Northwestern is the No. 1 seed and will face Notre Dame of Green Pond in a quarterfinal round game on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Northern Lehigh High School. Also in 2A, No. 6 seed Tamaqua will travel to Salisbury for a 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal round game on Thursday.

In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley earned the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 seed Freedom in a preliminary round game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. If the Bears win, they’ll travel to No. 2 seed Whitehall on Thursday for a quarterfinal round game.

FIELD HOCKEY

Four area teams qualified for postseason play and all of them are in Class 1A, including top-seeded Lehighton.

The other three local teams will all be involved in quarterfinal round play on Wednesday. No. 4 seed Northern Lehigh will host Bethlehem Catholic at 4 p.m.; No. 6 seed Palmerton will be at Wilson for a 3:30 p.m. game; and No. 7 seed Northwestern will travel to Moravian Academy for a 3:30 p.m. game.

No. 1 seeded Lehighton will be off until Monday, Oct. 29 when it plays the Northern Lehigh-Bethlehem Catholic winner in the semifinals. The site and time for that game have not yet been announced.

VOLLEYBALL

Five area teams are part of the volleyball playoffs with Panther Valley earning the top seed in Class 2A.

In Class 1A, Marian is the No. 4 seed and will host Williams Valley in a quarterfinal round game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In Class 2A, only four teams qualified. They will all be involved in a semifinal round doubleheader on Thursday at Lehighton High School. Panther Valley is the No. 1 seed and will meet No. 4 seed Pine Grove at 5 p.m. No. 3 seed Jim Thorpe and No. 2 seed Notre Dame of Green Pond will meet in the nightcap at 6:45 p.m.

In Class 3A, No. 6 seed Lehighton will be at No. 3 seed Blue Mountain for a 6 p.m. quarterfinal round game.

In Class 4A, No. 6 seed Pleasant Valley will meet No. 11 seed Stroudsburg on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Nazareth. The winner of that match will face the No. 3 seed Blue Eagles at 6:45 p.m. at Nazareth.

CROSS COUNTRY

The District 11 cross country championships will be held on Wednesday at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course,

The boys 2A event will kick things off at 1 p.m; girls 2A is at 1:40; boys 3A is at 2:20 p.m.; girls 3A is at 3 p.m.; boys 1A is at 3:40 p.m.; and girls 1A is at 4:20 p.m.
