A Carbon County man is apparently lucky to be alive after he was pulled from his burning car by two passing motorists. State police at the Pocono barracks said the incident occurred at 12:14 p.m. on Sunday along the turnpike in Jenkins Township, Luzerne County.
Troopers said John Bekas, 46, of Lehighton, was driving a Mazda CX5 southbound at mile post 113.8 when he experienced a medical condition which cause him to lose control of his vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the road and up an embankment, striking a tree. After impact with the tree, the engine caught fire.
Two men, identified as Michael Walowy, South Hampton, and George Hockins, Warminster, both of Bucks County, were traveling together and were able to remove Bekas from the vehicle while it was on fire. Bekas, still suffering the medical condition, was taken to the Geisinger-Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, for non-life threatening injuries.
