Carbon County Environmental Education Center is in the planning stages for Conservation Camp, which is an overnight adventure set in the scenic beauty of Hickory Run State Park.
Camp is set for Aug. 8-12. Registration for camp has begun, but space is limited to the first 25 registered campers between the ages of 8 and 12.
The campers are engaged in learning all weeklong. They are exposed to a variety of topics all relating to the outdoors and the environment while interacting with adults who are committed to teaching children a greater appreciation for the environment. Through these efforts, hopefully, their awareness about their environment is raised.
Campers get to make new friends, experience new activities and are exposed to experts in various fields that they would otherwise not have the opportunity to meet.
Some of the guest speakers in the past included rescue teams, experts in the fields of entomology, herpetology, and astronomy. Campers get the chance to express themselves creatively through art, explore their natural world and get outdoors.
“They stay up at camp Monday morning through Friday exploring the park and seeing a healthy environment at work. Events include hikes, crafts, white-water rafting and more. It is our hope they go home educated and tired and a little more comfortable being in the outdoors,” Susan Gallagher, chief naturalist, said.
Call 570-645-8597 and speak to Carbon County Environmental Education Center staff for more information on how to register.
