Zlomsowitch quits over superintendent vote

Lehighton Area School District Director Walter Zlomsowitch resigned in the middle of Monday’s meeting, saying he felt his “time and opinions were wasted.”

“When I ran, I had hoped to make a difference, and I want to thank the voters who trusted me to work for them,” Zlomsowitch said.

Much of Zlomsowitch’s displeasure seemed to surround the vote on the district’s new superintendent. Christina Fish, an administrator in the Central Columbia School District, was hired Monday by a 6-2 vote with Zlomsowitch casting one of the dissenting votes.

“I thought when we were first sitting down to try to find a replacement, the goal was to find an experienced superintendent,” Zlomsowitch said regarding the matter. “That was my thought but I guess it was just an assumption.”

After resigning, Zlomsowitch added that he “hoped the 2,490 people who elected him for a two-year seat and over 2,300 people who elected him to a four-year seat put their votes in the opposite position of any yes votes on (the superintendent hire).”

The board has 30 days to fill the vacancy created by the resignation.

“As a voter, I’m disappointed by that,” Laura Foeller said following Zlomsowitch’s decision. “We might not always agree with someone, but you’re doing a great injustice to the position which you were elected to take your ball and go home. If you want to make a difference, stand here and vote in what you believe in. Take your voice and use it.”

Dave Krause, a former Lehighton board member, also expressed his disappointment.

“There are probably other people who wanted to get a position on the board that would have hung in there longer than six months,” Krause said. “It’s a disservice to voters who put him in and now we’re left with an empty seat.”
