Tamaqua police seek man who skipped out on his trial
Tamaqua police are looking for a man who never returned to his jury trial in the Schuylkill County Court on Monday.
Police said Viorel “Victor” Onea, no address provided, was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts stalking.
But when the jury returned with a verdict after 40 minutes of deliberations, Onea never returned to court.
Police said he did not respond to two pages at the court, his telephone was not accepting calls and he was not spotted in the parking lot. When he could not be located, court resumed and the verdict was read.
When the jury was dismissed, the judge ordered a warrant for his arrest and modified his bail from $50,000 unsecured to $100,000 straight cash.
Onea has a history of harassing a woman who lives on West Rowe Street in Tamaqua dating back to 2017. In December 2018, the victim reported that over the past year, he had broken into her apartment, called and texted her at least 50 times each day and constantly bangs on her doors and windows.
She filed for a protection from abuse order in May 2018 and eventually Onea stopped bothering her. When she dropped the PFA a little while later, she told police that Onea resumed his stalking. He has blocked her from exiting her vehicle, stopped her from trying to get to work, and physically groped her “three to four times” a day. Police said he has left items at he victim’s apartment, knocked on her door so hard that he broke it, and has dumped garbage on her property. He has also struck her vehicle with a pole and his own vehicle.
Criminal charges were filed in January 2019. When he failed to show up for hearings, police issued warrants for his arrest. He turned himself in during the early part of the year, police said.
Anyone with information on Onea’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Office at 570-628-1350 or Tamaqua police at 570-668-5000.
