Halloween parade committee to partner with borough Parks & Rec Board
A potential partnership could be struck between the Lehighton Halloween Parade Committee and the Borough Parks & Recreation Board.
Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said at Monday’s borough council meeting that she contacted Julie Harris, chairwoman, Lehighton Halloween Parade Committee.
Abelovsky said the Halloween parade committee said it will be closing its account under the borough up and will open a new account.
The Halloween Parade Committee is not a committee of borough, as it is its own entity, and in 2014, they opened a checking account under the borough’s ID.
Abelovsky said the committee could have kept it as it is, or it could have just opened their own and close the one under the borough’s federal ID.
“To get insurance for individual organizations is very difficult,” she said after the meeting. “This is a way that they can partner with us and the parade can fall under the borough’s insurance so they won’t have to obtain their own.”
Abelovsky said it’s contingent on the committee closing their account now and rectifying the checking account situation.
Last month, council on a 5-0 vote approved the 51st annual Lehighton Area Halloween Parade Committee to be held on Oct. 15. The rain date is Oct. 16.
Council’s action came despite a shortage of fire police to oversee the event.
Harris noted at that time that in the past, the parade committee used to have insurance.
She said that while the parade committee could pay for its own insurance, the parade runs on donations.
Abelovsky told Harris at that time the other option would be to partner with the Lehighton Parks & Recreation Board.
Harris said the parade committee received a quote of $500 for two days worth of insurance.
She said that many years ago, it fell under the borough’s insurance.
Abelovsky said at that time the Parks & Recreation Board’s main goal is to partner with other organizations to provide recreational activities.
Harris said at that time the parade committee had to meet with the borough police department to ask for assistance of fire police.
However, borough Mayor Clark Ritter told Harris the right time for that would be once a new police chief is in place.
It was stated a new chief of police could be hired by either July or August.
Harris said that at past Halloween parades, there used to be one fire police person at every intersection.
