Mom gives birth, picked up on warrant
Soon after a New Ringgold woman gave birth, she was taken into custody on an active warrant.
According to Tamaqua police, Kathy Dee Tonkin, 27, also faces drug-related and child endangerment charges from the May 28 incident. In addition, police are charging her for giving a false name to authorities.
Police said they were dispatched for a report of a “pregnancy” at 45 N. Greenwood St. in Tamaqua. The caller, Joshua Fry, 40, who police said appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, said he was unsure of how to handle the pregnancy.
Police entered the apartment, noting it was in extremely poor condition with dust and dirt piling on tables. There was no electricity so first responders used flashlights to deliver the baby.
Police said Tonkin was lying on a collapsible cot measuring 2 by 6 feet and holding the baby, who was alert and crying.
When police asked her name, Tonkin twice said she was “Brittney Eck.” Officers noticed she was attempting to hide her face with a blanket.
Police noticed four baggies of methamphetamine, two of which were open, close to Tonkin and the baby. There were also uncapped syringes, pipes used to ingest methamphetamine and a spoon with residue near her.
Tonkin was transported to St. Luke’s in Pottsville.
Fry, who lives at the apartment, confirmed Tonkin’s identity after questioning and said she had ingested heroin intravenously approximately an hour before giving birth.
After being cleared by the hospital, Tonkin was taken into custody on the warrant by Pottsville police.
Charges against Tonkin include unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of children and false reports to law enforcement authorities.
Fry said the drugs in the apartment were not his and he did not know how they got there. He was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
