Nesquehoning council

Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting on Wednesday:

• Filed a request from Joe and Abbie Guardiani to be on the borough blight committee once formed. Council said the committee will move forward once a new council member is named and the board is complete.

• The borough decided that no changes to the 2022-2023 bus stops for Panther Valley were needed.

• Council reminds residents that this weekend, there will be gun salutes during Memorial Day events Sunday and Monday.

• Council President David Hawk said that street sweeping is not in the plans as of right now, because it wasn’t a bad winter.

• Discussed the plans of the homeowners involved in the fire on West Catawissa Street earlier this month. One homeowner plans to rebuild the structure, while one wants to demolish the property. The third homeowner has not provided details on what the plans will be for the burned building.

• No action was taken at this time regarding providing new addresses to the buildings Reading and Northern Railroad purchased from the REV Group. Council must determine if they should extend Catawissa Street to Park Avenue to provide new addresses or how it should be handled. Further discussion is needed before a decision can be made.

• Council tabled a payment for railroad crossing work on Industrial Road for the time being until a clarification on the final costs is received from the railroad.

• The next recreation commission meeting is 7 p.m. on June 6 at the recreation center.

• Council voted to change the name of the Earl Johnson Memorial Park on West Railroad Street to the Johnson and Jacobs Memorial Park in honor of the late Councilman Frank Jacobs. More information will be announced at a later time.
