American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 to hold Memorial Day services

The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington has announced the schedule for Memorial Day services.

The main service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Fairview Cemetery in Slatington.

Dennis Ziegler, past commander of Allen O. Delke Post 16, who is in his 23rd year as president of the Slatington Memorial Day and Veterans Day committees, encouraged residents to attend.

“We like to keep it going as long as we can,” Ziegler said. “All people are welcome.”

Rural services will begin Sunday. Ziegler said they will visit 13 cemeteries starting Sunday and into Monday morning, and that they put about 2,400 new flags down.

The parade route will form at 10 a.m. Monday at the Legion. From there, it will go up Second Street in Slatington to Fairview Cemetery, where services will start at 10:30 a.m.

The main speaker will be retired Sgt. Maj. Daryl Crawford, U.S. Army and Pennsylvania National Army Guard.

The Northern Lehigh High School Band will perform. Others who will be on hand are Pastor Halle Kluver from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Slatington, Borough Mayor Jeralyn Walters Schoch, and Legion Commander Ron Humanick, who will introduce the main speaker. The honor guard will give taps at the end of the program.

Also, military trucks will be in the parade, as Mike Marino will provide the deuce-and-a-half truck that will be at the stage.

The Legion also participates in the Veterans Day parade in Carbon County. Randy Szoke usually puts trucks in the parades.

Ziegler said the Legion is always in search of new members.

“Membership is a big deal,” he said.

Ziegler said they must be a veteran with a discharge paper.

He said anyone interested in joining may sign up at the Legion, or call Adjutant Earl Snyder at 610-703-5166.
