Local Roundup: Results from May 5

Marian’s baseball and softball teams both won in their final at-bats on Thursday.

The victory by the Fillies also clinched the Schuylkill League Division 3 championship.

Northwestern’s baseball team also scored in its last at-bat - in the 12th inning - to gain a win.

BASEBALL

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Three Jim Thorpe pitchers combined to throw a one-hit shutout as the Olympians posted a 7-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Tanner Yurchak started for Thorpe and tossed the first four innings, allowing no hits and three walks while striking out four. Ian Henkels relieved and went the next two-and-a-third frames, giving up the Raiders’ only hit and two walks while fanning three. Andrew Bosi closed things out by recording the final two outs.

The Olympians’ James Lordi reached base three times with a hit and two walks, scored a run and knocked in one. Henkels contributed a hit and two RBIs, with Lawrence Baldassano adding a hit and two runs.

Tamaqua’s only hit was registered by Wyatt Steigerwalt.

The win clinched a district playoff berth for Jim Thorpe, who is assured of at least a .500 record in the league. The Olympians, now 8-8 overall and 6-4 in the Schuylkill League, trail Blue Mountain by a game in the race for the Division 1 wild card. Thorpe travels to play the Eagles on Monday.

The loss drops Tamaqua to 1-13 and 1-9.

Nativity-Marian

Chase Petrilyak delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Marian to a 5-4 Schuylkill League victory over Nativity.

The Colts tallied four times in the opening inning, with three of them scoring on Jake Bobish’s home run. Marian failed to dent the plate the rest of the way until Petrilyak’s base hit chased home Michael Gelatko with the winning run.

Bobish finished with two hits, while Brian Hinkle added a double and a run scored. Mason Gibson chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

For Nativity, Nolan Ferhat collected two hits and scored a pair of runs.

Marian, who has four one-run wins this season, upped its mark to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in the league. Nativity drops to 8-7 and 5-5.

Pine Grove-Lehighton

Pine Grove won its 13th straight game and clinched the Schuylkill League Division 1 title with an 11-0 victory over Lehighton.

Hunter Deichert pitched a one-hit shutout for the Cardinals, allowing no walks while striking out five.

Ethan Hannevig collected two hits and walked twice, scored two runs and knocked in four. Quinn Brommer added a pair of hits and scored twice.

For the Indians, Michael Yeakel had his team’s only hit.

Pine Grove is now 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the league. Lehighton falls to 7-10 and 2-8.

Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Northwestern pushed across two runs in the 12th inning to give the Tigers a 7-5 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

After the Spartans scored in the home seventh to tie the game, the two teams played four scoreless innings until Northwestern broke through in the 12th.

Eli Zimmerman reached on an error to start the winning rally, and Chase Moyer followed with a double. Two batters later, Robert Croneberger delivered a two-run single to plate the go-ahead runs. Shaun O’Donnell, who tossed four scoreless innings in relief, preserved the victory in the home 12th.

Dylan Witkowski had four hits for the Tigers, who improved to 12-7 overall and 12-5 in the league. Croneberger, Joshua Lichman and Wesley George all finished with two hits.

Palmerton-Moravian A.

Palmerton rolled to a 15-3 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

Connor Beahm delivered a double and triple for the Blue Bombers, who closed out the game with a six-run seventh inning. Beahm scored three runs, reached base two other times on walks, and knocked in a run.

Chase Reph earned the complete-game victory, walking one and striking out 10. He also helped his own cause with a hit, two runs and two RBIs.

Nate Steinemtz added a hit and four RBIs, while Kale Eitner contributed a double, three runs and two RBIs.

Palmerton improved to 12-7 overall and 10-7 in the league, while the Lions fell to 3-14.

Catasauqua scored five runs in the first inning and cruised to a 16-3 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Brandon Jenny delivered a two-run double during the five-run first and the Roughies continued to score runs throughout the contest.

Chase Fye finished with four hits, including a home run, three runs and two RBIs for the winners, now 6-12 overall and 5-11 in the league.

For the Bulldogs, Cole Hausman had a double, a solo homer and knocked in two runs.

The loss dropped Nolehi to 1-18 overall and 1-15 in the league.

Stroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.

Stroudsburg pulled away from Pleasant Valley to post a 14-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory in a game played at the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Stadium.

The Mounties scored nine times over the final three innings to secure the win.

Brayden Sweppenhiser had four hits for the winners, adding three runs scored and three RBIs. Stroudsburg also received two hits, three runs and two RBIs from Mason Drozal.

The Bears managed just two hits, one each from Ben Mostosky and Nathan Loch. PV’s Dominic Payan walked twice and scored two runs.

The loss dropped Pleasant Valley to 13-6, while Stroudsburg upped its mark to 9-9.

Mahanoy Area had no trouble with Weatherly, rolling to an 18-1 Schuylkill League victory.

Levi Terry collected two hits, scored three times and drove home two runs to lead the Bears offensively.

The Wreckers finished with four hits - one each from Nathan Tripp, Jack James, Klaus Eroh and Dylan Buck. Weatherly avoided a shutout when Tanner Hinkle stole home in the fourth inning.

Mahanoy is now 6-10 overall and 2-9 in the league. The Wreckers are 1-14 and 0-10.

SOFTBALL

Nativity-Marian

Marian clinched the Schuylkill League Division 3 title with a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Nativity.

Morgan Kelly tripled to lead off the top of the eighth inning and scored on a ground out for the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

Kelly finished with three hits, including a solo homer in the sixth. She also earned the pitching win, tossing all eight innings.

The Fillies, now 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the league, also received a triple from Julia Meiss.

For Nativity (6-10; 5-6), Mikaya Beadle, Emily Krammes and Caelan Quick all had two hits.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Weatherly scored all its runs in the first inning, and left the rest to Madyson vonFrisch, as the Wreckers posted a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

Adrianna Dotzel delivered a two-run triple during Weatherly’s three-run first frame, while vonFrisch took care of things in the circle.

The Wrecker hurler finished with a two-hitter and struck out 16.

The winners, now 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the league, also received two hits and a run scored from Kelly Michaels.

Pine Grove scored multiple runs in every inning to gain a 16-1 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Emily Fisher had four hits and scored four runs for the Cardinals. Addison Zimmerman and Taylor Donmoyer both finished with three hits and a pair of runs.

The Indians managed just three hits in the contest - one each from Madyson Bergdahl, Marlee Craig and Makayla Scott.

Lehighton is now 6-11 overall and 3-8 in the league, while Pine Grove stands at 11-5 and 8-4.

Northern Lehigh held off Catasauqua for a 4-3 Colonial League victory.

Kendall Heiney scattered eight hits and three runs in gaining the pitching win. Heiney didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight.

Jordyn Hemingway collected two hits, scored a run and knocked in one for the Bulldogs, who won their third straight game and improved to 11-7 overall and 7-6 in the league.

The winners also received a triple and run scored from Arabella Heintzelman.

Alivia June and Sophie Becker both had two hits for the Roughies (4-10; 3-9).

Pleasant Valley

A nine-run third inning propelled Stroudsburg to a 13-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Natalie Berwick pitched a three-hit shutout, walking two and striking out eight to lead the Mounties.

Lea Guthy paced Stroudsburg offensively with three hits, two of them doubles, and three RBIs. Melissa Elko added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

The Bears received a double from Brianca Pridham and singles from Kailyn Getz and Jovie Venezuela.

Pleasant Valley slipped to 9-9, while the Mounties improved to 14-4.

Northwestern

Blaine Snyder had four goals to help lead Northwestern to a 9-6 victory over Southern Lehigh.

Austin Sosnovik contributed two goals and a pair of assists, while Andrew Collins finished with a goal and four helpers.

The Tigers, now 11-7, also received a goal and an assist from Drew Sabo. Devon Hildebrand added a goal and Cade Christopher chipped in with an assist.

Bailen Smargiassi made eight saves for Northwestern.

For the Spartans, who fell to 6-11, Ben Milichi scored all six of his team’s goals.
