JT pulls out extra inning win
Jim Thorpe and Lehighton combined for 16 runs, 24 hits and 10 errors on Friday, which left one coach satisfied and the other scratching his head.
“When we put the ball in play, good things can happen,” said Olympians head coach Joe Marykwas, whose team pulled out a 9-7 Schuylkill League victory in eight innings.
“We had too many errors,” said Lehighton coach JC Dietz. “You can’t keep giving them extra at-bats.”
Jim Thorpe (6-7) came off the bus and put up a three-spot in the top of the first inning.
James Lordi continued his torrid hitting with an RBI single to right field that drove in Garrett Leinhard, who had reached on an error and stole second. Drew Wimmer then banged a two-run double to left center scoring Lordi and Ian Henkels.
Lehighton (6-8) answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half thanks to hits by Aiden Rarick, his brother Ian, and - following an infield error - Talan Sensinger.
Thorpe would score runs in the next three innings on RBI singles from Chip Baldassano, Nick Schwartz and some misplayed infield pop-ups and outfield fly balls by the Indians’ defense.
The home team scored a run in the second on a single by Aiden Rarick that drove in Noah Barndt, but the Tribe still trailed 7-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
“The one thing I can always count on with our team is we fight to the very last out no matter what the score is,” said Dietz.
Lehighton scored a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-4 on a lead off triple by Ian Rarick and a groundout by Austin Greene. An inning later, the Tribe rallied for three runs on three hits to knot the score at seven.
A scoreless seventh sent the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Lordi - who was walked intentionally twice in the game - led off with a base hit to right. Ian Henkels then drove a long triple to right field plating Lordi. Jack Edwards drove in Henkels with a single for what would be the final run of the game.
Tanner Yurchak started the game for Thorpe and pitched the first four innings. Henkels threw the final four and, after surrendering the tying runs in the sixth, pitched two scoreless frames to earn the win.
“Tanner pitched to contact and our defense made some key outs behind him,” said Marykwas. “Ian kept his composure after a rough sixth and he threw more strikes in the last two innings.”
Jack Edwards had three hits for the Olympians. Aiden Rarick was 3-for-5 for the Indians.
STRIKE ZONE ... Despite the high number of runs and hits in the game, both teams’ pitchers combined for a mere three bases on balls with two of them being intentional walks to Lordi.
A WALK-OFF THAT WASN’T ... In the home seventh and with the score tied, Lehighton’s Michael Yeakel reached third base on a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, but was left stranded after an inning-ending ground out back to the pitcher.
GOOD LORDI! ... With his two hits against Lehighton, JT’s James Lordi is now 18-for-36 on the season, batting a red-hot .500.
