Fire evacuates Nesquehoning plant

A few dozen workers were evacuated Monday after smoke and a burning odor were detected at a Nesquehoning plant.

Responders from Carbon and Schuylkill counties converged on Heritage Frame and Glass Creations, 344 Industrial Complex Road just off Route 54, about 2:20 p.m. for a report of a possible fire.

Upon arrival, there were no flames visible, however workers on hand said they smelled smoke.

Reports of a hot smell and some smoke eventually were attributed to a fire inside in one of two dust collection systems located in a large building at the rear of the complex.

Among business activities conducted on-site is the manufacture of a sawdust-type byproduct, necessitating a system of the dust collection system and related ducts.

"There's one system and then there's a secondary system," said owner Jason Amodea of Nesquehoning. Amodea also said the plant has a fire detection system in place.

Amodea said the plant appeared to sustain no damage in the incident.

Fast action by first responders prevented major damage, said a fire official.

"The duct work runs along the whole roof," Shawn P. McArdle, captain, Nesquehoning Hose Company.

"It was quick response."

McArdle also said firefighters verified the presence of fire inside the dust collection system.

"We had high temperature readings in our thermal imaging cameras."

Responding were fire crews from Nesquehoning, Jim Thorpe, Lansford, Summit Hill and Hometown, in addition to Nesquehoning ambulance.
