Carbon County ranked second among the 67 counties of the state in the rate of deaths due to cancer in 1976, according to a report completed by the state Department of Health.
The study shows during the period of 1971-75, deaths from cancer in the county averaged 110 a year, whereas 135 such deaths occurred in 1976, giving the county a cancer mortality rate for the year of 258.6 per 100,000 population and a five-year rate of 212.8.
Schuylkill County ranked 13th in the state with a mortality rate of 223.6. A total of 356 people died from cancer in the county during 1976.
