Marian sweeps PV on the track
Mother Nature has not been in the mood for scholastic sports so far this spring.
Just query the Weatherly, Marian, Panther Valley and Nativity track teams.
Athletes from the four high schools had to endure temperatures dipping into the 30-degere range Wednesday in their Schuylkill League openers.
So bad are the weather conditions, none of the participating schools had a track ready for use. Tamaqua came to the rescue with its all-weather facility, allowing the meet to take place.
Through all of the adverse conditions, Marian and Nativity flexed their muscles.
The Colts had no problems speeding past Panther Valley 106-34, and the results were also positive for the Fillies in ringing up an 83-43 win over the Panthers. Meanwhile, Nativity swept Weatherly, winning the boys meet, 97-34, and the girls meet, 83-20.

The Colts were dominating on the track, winning every single race. They also claimed first place in the triple, long jump and high jumps. Indeed, it was a banner opening day for the Colts, who seem ready to defend the Division III championship, as well.
“We’re just so excited to get the season going; I know I am and our athletes were as well,” Marian coach Justin Huegel said. “We put a lot of time in to get ready for this. No one wanted to delay it - not even with the weather. It was a hectic day, but a good day.”
Marian’s speedy Mike Fellin had a good start to the season in sprints.
Fellin is one of the region’s top sprinters. He is a returning district champion and a state medalist.
Fellin didn’t seem overly concerned about a twinge in his hamstring. “It will be okay, as long as I warm up well and keep myself warm. I loved being out here, even though it’s a little cool ... we had some sunshine and that made it great.”
Fellin came out of the blocks in a hurry to capture the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.7, followed by teammates Jacob Fenstermaker and Devin Smith-Grant. Fenstermaker also won the 200 in 24:90, while Panther Valley’s Logan Haines finished second. The Colts also swept the 400-meters led by Lliam Sanphy, who crossed in a with a time of 1:01.4.
In the distance runs, Marian’s Alex Porambo (800) and Albino Petschauer (1600 and 3200) both picked up wins.
In the hurdles, Alex Kokosky and Michael Silliman had wins for the Colts. Logan Fritz was the winner in the high jump for Marian, while teammates Silliman (long jump), Jesse Rodino (triple jump), and James Rodino (discus) also grabbed firsts.
One unique twist to this meet came from PV’s standout four-sport athlete, Mike Pascoe, who jumped over from the baseball diamond to heave the discuss and shot put.
“I did this in eighth grade,” Pascoe said. “I would have done it sooner, but COVID hit. I’m very comfortable with it (playing both sports). My (baseball) coaches are okay with it, and that’s all that matters.”
Pascoe, who quarterbacks the football team and plays for PV’s basketball team, didn’t mind the chill. His 39-5 toss of the shot put gave him a first-place finish. Pasco’s teammate, Brad Lee, won the javelin with a toss of 125-4.
“We are all on board with it,” said Panthers’ track coach Paul McArdle, about Pascoe’s spring sports double. “Team sport first. Our coaches (at PV) like the fact that they are going to cross over and play another sport. Mike is baseball first, but I’m impressed with what he’s shown so far.”
The Fillies also had an impressive opening day on the track, as they nearly duplicated the boys perfect performance.
Fatikha Tiktova was the star of the day as she recorded wins in the triple jump, long jump and high jump.
Marian’s Carly Minchhoff was the top runner in the 100 meters with a time of 13.4, outracing PV’s Makayla Weaver and Sera Robin. Marian’s Kerrigan Digris claimed first in the 200 meter run, followed by teammates Caitlyn Kovatch and Minchhoff.
Marian’s Grace Curnow was first to the finish line in the 400 meters in a time of 1:05.50, ahead of teammates Digris and Alizabeth Pikitus. The distance runs found Marian’s Isa Genso first in the 800, while Emma Ashfield took the 1600. The Fillies’ Eliza Bauder won the 300 hurdles.
Panther Valley’s wins came from Chloe Diekman (3200), Weaver (100 hurdles), Izabella Bochicchio (shot put), Mikayla Yurichek (discus), and Sadie Trubilla (javelin).
