Nesquehoning is slowly rebuilding its police force after several resignations and medical issues brought the department to a single officer earlier this year.
On Wednesday, borough council approved hiring Michael Weaver as a full-time officer with a starting salary of $29.50.
Mayor Thomas Kattner said that Weaver is “a good, young man” and commended the board for taking the time to sit with him during the interview so everyone could get to know him.
Weaver’s hiring brings the full-time officers back up to three, but one is currently out on medical leave. The count doesn’t include the chief.
There are also currently no active part-time officers working in the borough.
Kattner said that this is a starting point, adding that he received two additional applications for full-time officers.
“We’re making progress,” he said. “Nesquehoning will come back to where we need to be.”
Nesquehoning is always looking for part-time help. Officers interested in part-time hours can apply by visiting nesquehoning.org and clicking on the police department link.
In other matters, Kattner also requested approval for the installation of no parking signs along Mermon Avenue near the Panther Valley Elementary School, particularly near the intersection with Locust Street.
He said that it can become a hazard when someone is trying to pull out of Locust Street and someone is parked there waiting to pick up their child.
