Talks between the Pleasant Valley School Board and the teachers union renewed on Monday. A new contract could be completed within weeks.
At the school board meeting on Thursday, school district solicitor Mark Fitzgerald said the contract with the Pleasant Valley Education Association may be agreed upon by April.
“As you may recall two weeks ago, there were marathon bargaining sessions with the association that produced what I would describe as significant results. It allowed for the strike that was essentially scheduled for Feb. 28 to be averted,” Fitzgerald said.
“At this point, the parties are finalizing language issues and economic issues.”
Fitzgerald said he will keep the board notified of the progress with the teachers union.
Fitzgerald also said that because they have been focused on negotiating with the teachers union, nothing has been done to work on the contract negotiations with the support staff.
Meetings have been scheduled with their negotiators for later on this month, he said.
The bargaining negotiation team for that contract will include the school board President Susan Kresge, its Vice President Laura Jecker, and Director Melanie Zipp.
Kresge thanked the bargaining negotiation team for the teachers’ contract for their work on it. That team include Directors Norman Burger, Michael Galler and Diane Serfass, as well as Fitzgerald.
“I can’t say a big enough thank you to all our team that did do the professional staff (negotiations),” she said.
“Thank you so much for all of the long hours and time you devoted to those negotiations.”
