Weatherly council deals with paving, parks
Weatherly borough council has selected a contractor for the borough’s 2022 streets paving program. Low bidder Pennsy Supply asked for $75,646 to pave Maple Street, Younker and Edee avenues, and Dean Grey, Iris, Violet and Killian alleys. Borough solicitor Jim Nanovic will go over the contract and give his approval. Other bidders were Lehigh Asphalt Paving & Construction and Hazleton Site Contractors, and Haines & Kibblehouse.
Council approved applying for two grants from the statewide Local Shares Account gaming pool that is funded by internet gaming. Borough Manager Harold Pudliner told council members that his primary grant application will be to finish the hiking and biking trail linking the borough to the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails trail, and to the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Trail.
“This is a $1.5 million trail,” Pudliner said. “The first phase will cost $700,000 and I don’t know if we have enough to finish it. I think we have a good shot at the grant, because we already have had a grant.”
The grant became available on Jan. 26, and the deadline to apply is March 13. “That’s not a lot of time (to do) a lot of work,” Pudliner added. The request amount will be determined by the engineers for the trail.
The second grant application would be for money toward the restoration of the former Schwab school building.
Electronics recycling days for the Weatherly area will be July 9 and Sept. 8 at Eurana Park. Electronics recycling will be open to residents of Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships, as their governments chip in on the cost. Weatherly borough would pay $1,555, Packer $330, Lehigh $176 and Lausanne $173.
A community cleanup of Eurana Park will be from 8 a.m. to about 2 p.m. on the first Saturdays of April, May and June, council member Joseph Thomas said.
The fountain park on Wilbur Street also needs attention. Pudliner agreed and said fountain park should be totally redone with new landscaping.
Council member Norman Richie said the borough should buy additional Christmas decorations for Evergreen Avenue and East Main Street, and the prices for these items drop this time of year.
