Veterans food box program expands

A veterans food box program in Carbon County is expanding and registration will be held in March, a county commissioner announced.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that American Legion Post 360 and the post auxiliary in Weatherly have teamed up to create a second side for the MilitaryShare program in Carbon County.

The MilitaryShare Program provides food boxes from Second Harvest Food Bank to any county veteran and their family and includes fresh produce, milk, eggs, meat and nonperishable foods.

The county joined the program in October 2021 with a site at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314.

Ahner said that site serves close to 50 veterans.

Because of the distance in the counties, Weatherly American Legion opted to create a second location in the northern tier of Carbon.

Registration for the program will now be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on March 12 and 13 at the Weatherly American Legion.

Ahner said the county hopes to serve at least 100 veterans a month by the end of the year, and noted that a third site, in the Panther Valley area, is being discussed.

Pickup dates and times at the Weatherly site will be announced after sign-ups are held.

The MilitaryShare Program is operated through the Carbon County Veterans Council and made possible through Second Harvest, as well as the Pennsylvania Veterans Trust Fund and Subaru Foundation.
