A 72-year-old woman who was a member of the Philadelphia Korean Hiking Club died of injuries she sustained when she fell Sunday morning along the Glen Onoko Falls hiking trail in Lehigh Township, Carbon County.
State police at the Hazleton barracks said the name of the victim is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.
They were called to the State Game Lands No. 141 at approximately 10:33 a.m. for a report of an unconscious fall victim and upon arrival were met by members of the Jim Thorpe Fire Department, Lehighton EMS, the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Police said fire and EMS personnel extricated the woman down the mountain from the location of the fall, near the first waterfalls, over the treacherous, steep and ice-covered terrain.
The victim was transported to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township, where she succumbed to injuries she sustained in the fall and was pronounced dead at 12:43 p.m.
Police said the woman and club members had chartered a bus for 22 members to trek the Glen Onoko Falls trail.
Police said the trail in which they were hiking was permanently closed due to dangerous conditions.
On May 1, 2019, the Pennsylvania Game Commission officially closed the trail, citing deteriorating trail conditions.
At least eight people have died in the past 40 years at the falls. Injuries occurred about once a month while the trail was still open, officials said.
