Tamaqua school board

The Tamaqua Area School Board proposed the following items in committee meetings this week, with items to be voted upon at the Feb. 15 meeting:

• To add Feb. 21, which is Presidents Day, as an Act 80 Day to be used to work on some curriculum issues for the school. Additional Act 80 days may be also be added, possibly Feb. 17 and 18. The high school band will be going away from Feb. 15 and returning Feb. 21, and several teachers will be going as well. The Act 80 days might be needed depending on the availability of substitute teachers.

• March 25 as a virtual day for the kindergarten students only. The school district has a significant number of kindergarten registrations for next year and will need to take the time to meet with parents.

• Proposed Vice Principal Lisa Shirvinski as attendance and truancy officer. This position, to be approved on a yearly basis, is necessary in order to file citations with the magistrate’s office.

• Buy protective mats for the stadium track in the amount of $12,114.95 from Pioneer Athletics, Cleveland, Ohio. These mats are to protect the track surface from such things as football cleats and equipment.

• Buy Two new wrestling mats from Resilite in Sunbury at a cost of $20,236. The older wrestling mats will be sold.

• To meet on March 15 following the school board meeting to discuss the 2022-23 budget.

• To discuss funds and submission of grants for the American Recovery Act funds totaling $3,846,640, with 20% required for Learning Loss, and $298,970 for the new math curriculum. Grant applications and paperwork are due by March 1.
