Meeting canceled

The Eldred Township Planning Commission meeting scheduled for tonight is canceled. The next meeting of the Planning Commission will be March 9.

Scout Sunday

Salem UCC, Gilbert, celebrated Scout Sunday this past Sunday with a good number of Scouts participating in the event. It was followed by a social hour in the church’s social hall.

Cranberry Bog walk

Want to participate in the winter walk at the Tannersville Cranberry Bog on Saturday? Preregistration is due today at the Monroe County Conservation District. Call the center at 570-629-3061 until 4:30 p.m. for details.

Legion meeting

Auxiliary Unit 927 will meet at 7 tonight, at the Legion Post home in Gilbert for its monthly gathering. Guests are welcome.

WPCL Jersey day

On Thursday the Western Pocono Community Library is hosting Jersey Day. Patrons are encouraged join in the fun with the WPCL staff and wear their favorite sports jersey to the library.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League Board of Directors meeting is on the calendar for Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Township Park.

Mission meal

West End Mission will be serving its next takeout meal at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Brodheadsville on Thursday, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Polk meeting

A general meeting for Polk Township is on the calendar for 8 a.m. Thursday.

Seniors tax help

Carbon County’s AARP is once again coming to Salem UCC in Gilbert to help call to 484-764-6964 to make a reservation for an appointment. No walk-ins are accepted.

PV Board meets

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in Brodheadsville.

Effort pantry open

The Supplemental Food Resource Center (food pantry) at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Distribution of food is being limited to drive up/pick up service only.

Breakfast offered

McMichaels UMC will be serving a donation-only breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. A complete breakfast will be served along with a beverage. Takeout only. Everyone is welcome.

Free fishing exhibit

Join local artist Don Baylor, a former educator of many years, at the debut of his exhibit in the Gallery at Kettle Creek at 10 a.m. Saturday, as he discusses hike-ins, pack trips, and a llama trek into beautiful out-of-the-way locations in Montana, Colorado and Wyoming.

Though these were fishing trips, the spectacular scenery will be emphasized for the non-angler. Baylor’s artwork will be on display in the gallery through Feb. 28. There is no charge. For information, call the center at 570-629-3061.

Two park events

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring two events at the Chestnuthill Park on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to noon on is the annual drop-in event for the yearly WEPOSC pine cone bird feeder to make a free treat for the area’s fine, feathered friends. Then, from 3 to 5 p.m. people are invited to taste some chili at the WEPOSC Chili Cook-off. There is fee, which depends on the age of the taster. Paid entries will get to vote on their respective favorite chili.

Winter bog walk

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is offering a winter Tannersville bog walk at 2 p.m. Saturday. Preregistration is required. Participants will meet at the bog parking lot by 2 p.m.

For directions and to make the required preregistration, due today, contact the center at 570-629-3061. Masks must be worn for the duration of the walk.

Souper events

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is celebrating the Super Bowl and Souper Bowl this Sunday. To help celebrate the latter, church family members and friends are asked to bring cans of soup to church to help supply the local food banks.

St. John’s Lutheran Church on Merwinsburg Road, Effort, is once again is having its Souper bowl collection to benefit PVEN. Worshippers are asked to bring cans of soup and deposit them in their favorite team bucket. The worship service is at 9:30 a.m., but the “souper” bowl luncheon has been canceled.

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran is accepting offerings for ELCA World Hunger.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, recalls that a simple prayer by Brad Smith which started a youth movement of giving and sharing, so the church will be collecting an offering for PVEN.

Worshippers are asked to look for the big soup pot of their favorite team into which to place their respective donations.
