Stolen 22-year-old bobcat Blanch returned to zoo

A 22-year-old bobcat was returned to a Monroe County zoo Friday after a man stole her earlier in the day.

The incident occurred at Pocono Snake and Animal Farm around 10:15 a.m.

“She is just stressed out. We are stabilizing her, we’re on the phone with the veterinarians now, and we’re going to be running her to the veterinarian first thing in the AM,” said Jon Lowris, whose family owns the zoo.

The theft occurred around 10 a.m. A man was seen on video walking from a car, entering the unlocked front door of the zoo, and emerging with the bobcat, known as “Blanch.”

Video reportedly showed the bobcat trying to escape the man as he carried it to the car, which state police identified as a red 2011-15 Hyundai Elantra.

Lowris said that video showed that the man grabbed her, wrestled her, threw her on the ground, and then threw her in the car. He said that she was found stuffed in a small animal carrier with a chain around her neck.

“She’s on arthritis medication, we were concerned about that and plus the fact that he was so rough with her,” Lowris said.

According to the Smithsonian National Zoo, bobcats live between 5-15 years in the wild, but live longer in captivity.

The zoo is currently closed to the public for the winter. Lowris said that the zoo’s three employees work year round. He said no one was in the business at the time.

He said the man was not known to the business and they do not know why he targeted it.

He credited the state police with doing an amazing job locating and stopping the thief.

“We’ve been here 52 years, and we’ve never had anything happen like this. I can’t wrap my head around it, I have no explanation why an individual would do something like this,” he said.
