Carbon County court

An Effort woman was sentenced to a prison term for retail theft while an Allentown man got prison time for driving under the influence.

Both defendants, who previously pleaded to the charges, were sentenced Thursday in Carbon County court by Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Mahoning incidents

Denise A. Crooker, 56, was sentenced to serve 2 to 18 months in prison on the theft count.

She was arrested by state police at Fern Ridge on Oct. 21, 2020, at the General Dollar Store in Penn Forest Township, where she stole items valued at $132.30.

Crooker’s sentencing was done via video from the Northampton County prison where she is being held on another retail theft charge, now rated a felony 3. That case is still pending.

Serfass also ordered her to get a mental health evaluation, supply a DNA sample and when released on parole render 75 hours of community service.

Allen Person, 29, of Allentown, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, pay a fine of $1,000, license suspended for a year and ordered to render 25 hours of community service.

He was arrested on March 18, 2021, by state police at Lehighton, for DUI of a controlled substance along Route 443 in Mahoning Township.

He will begin serving the 72 hours at 9 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
