Schuylkill couple waives in child endangerment case

The two people charged with child endangerment of a 3-year-old girl waived their preliminary hearing Monday.

Ryan and Abigail Sonnon, Mahanoy City, had a hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge James Reiley. Each is charged with two felony counts of endangering the welfare of children and one count of endangering another person. Both are out on $10,000 unsecured bail after Reiley with the approval of the assistant district attorney modified the bail, court records show.

State police said Schuylkill County Children and Youth removed the girl.

Police said the child was “malnourished to the point of requiring emergency medical care to prevent serious bodily injury or death.”

The child was found to have been suffering from “extreme dental decay of her teeth due to a poor diet,” police said.

She was “covered in insect bites from bedbugs” and had an extreme infestation of lice.

Police did not say when the child was removed from a home in Mount Carbon, except that the investigation was between January and December. They were arrested Christmas Eve in Mahanoy City.

Howard Merrick, owner of the property, said a constable escorted all three from the property in June.

He called CYS at least three times about the couple, he said.

The agency didn’t return any of his calls, but he did see people visit the home, although he does not know if they were with the agency.

Merrick also called the state police, who came several times.
