An elderly woman was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Monroe County on Sunday.

State police at Lehighton said the crash occurred at 1:29 p.m. along Route 534 in Polk Township.

The Monroe County Coroner’s office identified the woman as Ruth Heilemann, 89, Albrightsville.

Police said she was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu southbound when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree, causing in significant damage to the front end.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers were assisted by volunteers from the Polk Township Fire Company and West End ambulance corps.

The investigation is continuing.
