The flow of voters at the Ross and Chestnuthill township polling places was higher than some people thought they would be on Tuesday.

At Ross, Jody Kneisly and her husband, Tom, both said they did not really expect a big turnout. The Kneislys, both Republicans, were at the Ross Township polling place to collect enough write-in votes to give Dr. Lawrence Kahn a seat on the Pleasant Valley School Board.

Poll worker Janet Butchro said, “It is around 3:45 p.m. and so far we have had 409 voters.”

People at the West End Volunteer Fire Company, a polling place for Chestnuthill residents, echoed the surprise at the number that had come out to vote. Especially since it is pretty cold outside,” said Nellie Gordon of Effort.

She was trying to get enough write-ins for judge of elections.

“There wasn’t anyone running for it, so I thought I would give it a try,” Gordon said.

At around 4 p.m. Chestnuthill had 406 ballots cast upstairs and 430 ballots cast downstairs.

“Despite all the hype in the news about the safety and validity of mailing and drop-off boxes, it will be interesting to see how many voters planned ahead and either mailed their ballot or put it in one of the county’s drop boxes, said Linda Zak of Saylorsburg.

The seven boxes were located at the Western Pocono Public Library, Brodheadsville; Pocono Mountain Public Library, Tobyhanna; Eastern Monroe Public Library, Stroudsburg; Clymer Library, Pocono Pines; Middle Smithfield Community; Center Library, East Stroudsburg; and Monroe County Administration Building, Stroudsburg.
