Fall cleanup questionable this year in Summit Hill
Summit Hill Borough always has a spring and fall cleanup for its residents, where they can dispose of such things as bulky items, old appliances and car tires.
It’s not certain if there will be one this year.
It all depends on the trash collecting company, the borough council said last week.
The borough also has an annual electronics recycling event, but this hasn’t happened yet in 2021.
Trash collecting matters were among the items discussed during the monthly meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council.
Meanwhile, bids were opened for a new trash collecting contract which will take effect in January. The current hauler, County Waste, showed little interest in renewing its pact.
Bids were sought for one, two, three and four year contracts, with or without regular recycling and with or without electronic recycling.
County Waste bid only on a four-year agreement with no recycling provisions.
Meanwhile, two other firms, Tamaqua Transfer and J P Mascaro & Sons, tendered bids on every provision offered.
The bids were tabled until they are reviewed by the borough’s solicitor, attorney Robert Frycklund.
For a four-year contract, County Waste submitted a bid of $1,979,920.
For the same four-year pact, Tamaqua Transfer posted a bid of $1,288,311. J P Mascaro and sons had the highest bid of $2,526,432.
Each bidder except for County Waste offered 24 different prices, depending on the length of the contract and the services sought.
For example, a one-year contract with Tamaqua Transfer was $316,344 without recycling and $332,344 with recycling. With regular recycling and an electronic recycling collection, the cost would be $362.344.
J P Mascaro had a one year offer of $631,608 without recycling.
Regarding this year’s fall cleanup and electronic recycling, council member David Wargo said the borough is still waiting for County Waste to schedule these events.
Joseph Weber, a member of council, said the borough was told on July 30 that the dates for the fall cleanup and electronic recycling would be rescheduled, “but they still haven’t set a date.”
“We will continue to press the issue (with the contractor),” Wargo said.
He said the existing contract calls for the two collections to occur.
