According to Walnutport Fire Department Chief Walter Ingles, smoke detectors saved the lives of the three residents at 111 Main Street in the borough early Saturday morning.
Sixty-five firefighters responded to the 12:45 a.m., call on Main Street when a fire broke out on the first floor.
The residents were awakened by the sound of the dwelling's fire alarms and made it out side with out life threatening injuries. Two of the three were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
It took two hours to get the flames under control, Ingles said. Slatington and Lehigh Township joined the Walnutport department to extinguish the fire.
"There is extensive damage to the first floor with smoke damage to the second and third floors," said Ingles.
This is only the second fire in the borough since April. Ingles, who took over as chief in May, said Walnutport "doesn't have many major fires."
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the fire marshal.
