For Carla Binder, quirky is in.

She hopes her customers have the same appreciation for the quirkiness that she tries to create at her new boutique, Taking Deeper Roots.

Located at 140 Edgemont Ave. in Palmerton, Taking Deeper Roots offers an eclectic mix of home décor that ranges from handmade and vintage, to repurposed.

Binder - who recently wrapped up a weeklong grand opening celebration - at her business - said she soon plans to offer interior design consultations.

“Taking Deeper Roots is my new art and design studio, with the primary goal of inspiring growth of individual style,” Binder said.

Binder has well-established “roots” in Palmerton herself, as for 28 years, she was the proprietor of Creative Framing by Carla.

She has a formal education and degree in architectural technology, and completed the design program at Northampton Community College.

Binder’s journey has come full circle, as she’s accompanied by her daughter, Sarah, and their shared passion for art and design.

“People have wondered why I chose this particular name for my business, and I love to share the reason,” she said. “As we all know, life has a funny way of changing things up and throwing things in front of you when you least expect it.”

Binder explained her inspiration for the new business.

“After my breast cancer diagnosis in 2017, the first piece of art I created was an illustration for a pin based on Dolly Parton’s quote ‘Storms Make Trees Take Deeper Roots’?” she said. “I love the inspiration that gives me, and as I travel along this new path I am “Taking Deeper Roots.”

Binder said she was able to gain a greater perspective on things in the brief time since she’s been closed.

“I had been closed for over 1½ years, so right now it feels like I’m starting new, starting fresh,” she said. “It’s been unbelievable; I’ve had such a feeling of peace.”

Binder said her business approach fits her particular needs.

“I love people, I love to be able to talk to people,” she said. “I’m hoping to make as many people aware of that as possible.”

Binder explained her goal is an interior design concept, as well as working on creating her yard as a “little bit of a sanctuary.”

“I’d like to share it with my customers where they can come and find quirky things that I’ve done, come and sit and enjoy,” she said.

“I hope that they find things they love for their home, and some relaxation time.”

Starting next week, the business is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the first and third Saturday and Sunday in May through October. It is open every Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through April.
