CCEEC rabies discussion set for Oct. 13

The Carbon County Environmental Education Center will hold a virtual talk on the history and development of the rabies vaccine on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m.

Susan Gallagher, Chief Naturalist at CCEEC, will co-host the program with Dr. Carl Frankel, a retired Penn State University biology professor on Zoom.

Gallagher will highlight Louis Pasteur’s development of the first rabies vaccine and will explain how CCEEC staff protects themselves from disease while working with wildlife.

Frankel, who lectured on human disease while at Penn State, will offer insight into how the present-day vaccine works and how it differs from today’s COVID-19 vaccines.

“People should know this story,” said Gallagher. “Today, human rabies are one of the rarest diseases in the United States. And how we got to this point in preventing it in people is as fascinating as the virus itself.”

The program is free, but registration is required. A registration link is available at carboneec.org.

Interested participants should call 570-645-8597, or email sugal@ptd.net.
