Jury convicts cop accused of letting drug dealer go

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - A former northeastern Pennsylvania police officer accused of accepting prescription painkillers in exchange for letting a drug dealer go has been convicted of charges.

The Times-Tribune of Scranton reports (http://bit.ly/1XeV8Th) that that a Wilkes-Barre jury convicted Kenneth Shotwell late Tuesday afternoon of bribery, obstructing justice and official oppression.The 46-year-old Duryea man was a Dupont police officer when he pulled over an oxycodone dealer in March 2013. Prosecutors say a Hughestown police officer - to whom the driver had been dealing drugs - asked the driver to give oxycodone to himself and to Shotwell for letting him go.Shotwell's lawyer said he and his client are disappointed by the verdict.Shotwell cannot serve as a police officer anymore.
