Services set for Mahanoy teen killed in crash

Funeral services will be held in Tamaqua for a Mahanoy City teen who died in a vehicle crash Saturday in Wayne County.

Nicholas M. Dunphy, 16, was killed in Preston Township near 1346 Crosstown Highway, Lakewood, Wayne County Coroner Edward R. Howell said in an email. Howell pronounced Dunphy dead at the scene of the crash, which was just before 6 p.m. He was the driver of a Dodge Dakota that struck multiple trees after driving off the edge of the eastbound lane of the highway. He died of multiple traumatic injuries, Howell said. His death was ruled an accident.

Services are scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. at the Lamar Christ Funeral Home, 31 Mahanoy Ave.

A GoFundMe post by Michael Harris, said the Harris family is handling funeral expenses. Help is appreciated.So far, $6,745 out of $10,000 has been donated.

“We would like to thank everyone for their support. It has been overwhelming and more than we could have ever expected,” the post reads.

Another GoFundMe page by Brian Webbe, uncle of Nicholas, said Michael, Nicholas’ father, and brother Jason were also involved in the crash. The father was flown to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton with “significant traumatic injuries.” Jason had minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital.

The post asks for thoughts and prayers. Donations are also requested for medical expenses and household bills.

“I understand that, for many, times are tough and money is tight. But please, if you can find it in your heart to donate, no matter the amount, please do. Every little bit helps and God knows they need our help now,” the post reads.

To date, $7,695 out of a $20,000 goal has been donated.
