31 injured in Schuylkill bus crash

Thirty-one people were injured when a bus went into the woods while going southbound on Interstate 81 in Frailey Township Sunday.

A supervisor with the Schuylkill County Communications Center said of the 31 people with varying degrees of injuries, six were flown to hospitals. The injured were sent to Geisinger Hospital in Shamokin, Danville, Hershey and Lehigh Valley Hospital Schuylkill-East Norwegian Street.

He said the call in came into the center at 2:35 p.m. for a bus crash. State police at Frackville said the crash took place as a bus from Lancaster was traveling southbound in the area of mile marker 111.7, which is between the Hegins and Tremont exits. The driver lost control, traveling off the road and off the right shoulder. The bus traveled across Route 25, striking a center guardrail, an embankment and about 50 feet into the woods.

Responding to the scene were fire departments in Schuylkill County and EMS from Schuylkill, Lebanon, Dauphin and Northumberland, the communications center said. As of 8:30 p.m. state police were still on scene.
