School taxes

The Tamaqua Area School District is accepting Assessed Occupation Tax exemption applications for the 2016-2017 school year. This will cover the 2016 calendar year. This year's forms are blue.Retired people and those with no earned income who have previously been exempted do not need to file again unless their status has changed and they are now earning income.Also, those who are disabled or at least 75 years of age who have been specifically notified of their exemption by the district need not file an application.Students who reach the age of 18 by June 30, 2016, will be responsible for paying the tax unless exempt by application.Requests for exemption must be filed with the district by March 1.Application forms are available at the school district administration building, all tax collectors' offices, Tamaqua Borough Hall, the Tamaqua Public Library, and all post offices and bank branches within the district.Adult Day CareThe Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center has a variety of activities planned for January, including a singalong with Audrey Christ on Jan. 11.Other activities for the month include: Jan. 14, scrapbooking; Jan. 20, Salvation Army service; Jan. 22, Eskimo craft day; Jan. 28, exercise with Jeanie.In addition to weekly singalongs, exercise sessions, a variety of therapies and social games, the center provides for hairstyling service, which requires advance notice. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are served daily.Anyone interested in obtaining more information about the center, or services provided, may call 570-668-6577 or visit Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.St. John LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday's 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John's Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.Also on Sunday, Confirmation and Sunday school classes meet at 10:30 a.m.Activities for next week are: Monday, church council meeting at 7 p.m.; Thursday, angel choir practices at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 a.m. and chancel choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.Calvary UMThe Rev.
