Students to host annual holiday program for senior citizens

It’s a morning filled with music, poems, and jokes capped off by a hearty turkey dinner for lunch.

All that and more awaits those who attend Slatington Elementary School’s 39th annual Senior Citizens Holiday Program and Holiday Dinner on Tuesday.

Tim Weaber, one of the teaching coordinators, said 187 senior citizens have signed up to attend, as the program is open to senior residents in the Northern Lehigh community along with grandparents of the students.

Weaber said those who attend will be treated to holiday songs, poems, jokes and crafts made by students in grades 3-6.

He said the meal will consist of turkey, sweet potatoes, corn, gravy, cranberry sauce, coffee, tea and ice cream.

In addition, Weaber said homemade cookies are made by the students’ parents and boxed to the local senior citizen residences.

Also, he said a high school choral group will sign throughout the program, as well as while the senior citizens enjoy their meal.

“It is the goal of the staff, students, and parents that, through the program and meal, we will be able to bring joy to the lives of our respected and valued community seniors,” Weaber said. “They are the ones who have contributed so much to making the Northern Lehigh Community a great place to live and grow.”
